I enjoyed the MLB Network immensely. That’s past tense because I discontinued my cable provider’s sports package last year that included the channel. I am a fan of Harold Reynolds and his sincere doting on the finer nuances of the game. And the rest of the reporters, hosts, and analysts brought a lot to their comprehensive coverage. But the cost of the sports package did not justify continuing that part of my contract solely for the MLB Network, particularly with a better option.

That option is MLB.TV. I gave MLB.TV a test run during last season’s playoffs, and I was very pleased with what it delivered. As a result, I decided to sign up for my first full season of MLB.TV this season. Some of the end user highlights include multiple camera view options, picture-in-picture, in-game stats, replay control, and several other choices you simply do not have when watching a game on broadcast television.

I will be able to experience these options via a number of devices. In the home, I can connect to any televised game using a Roku box, Xbox 360, or Sony PlayStation 3. On the go, I can connect to any game with my smartphone, tablet or laptop. Again, that far exceeds the potential baseball viewing options I had with being restricted to what is aired on television at a given time. And as for being subjected to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver, depending on the game, MLB.TV may offer an alternate broadcast.

The only thing that can remotely be considered a downside is that, because of my broadcast region, Atlanta Braves games are blocked on MLB.TV. However, that’s not such a bad deal because Sports South is still part of my basic cable package. Braves fans who do not live in this region should be jealous because the Sports South coverage is excellent.

I am already enjoying some of what MLB.TV has to offer with limited preseason coverage. This, along with my previous postseason experience, has me really looking forward to the full-blown regular season features. After a while of being immersed in the wonderful world of “baseball everywhere,” I will provide a review of my MLB.TV experience.
